Phd Thesis. Research was designed to (1) develop a method to determine the limiting nutrient in a lotic ecosystem; resulted in production of the Matlock Periphytometer, (2) measure limiting nutrient in three watersheds in a basin; Peacheater, Tyner, and Battle Creeks, and (3) determine periphytic trophic status of lotic ecosystems in specific watersheds within a basin. Discussion of the research, with recommendations for further work are included.

DRAFT. "A systematic approach to addressing pollution proglems in the basin." Report is focused on a holistic view of problems, presents potential solutions as the pertain to the entire Illinois River Basin. Plan is designed to correlate with OSRC's plan for the corridor and Arkansas' plan for their portion of the basin. Includes review section of previous Illinois River Basin work.

Used Matlock Periphytometers and the Lotic Ecosystem Trophic Status Index to measure baseline primary productivity and maximum primary productivity in Peacheater, Tyner, and Battle Creeks. Fluctuation in nutrient limitation in the streams over time was noted, as were co-limitations of N and P in two of the three streams.

Used periphytic chlorophyll a production, as measured from the Matlock Periphytometer, to assess in situ nutrient limitation and trophic status in the Bosque River Watershed in north-central TX. The developed Lotic Ecosystem Trophic Status Index is a functional index that may be used as a classification tool.
