Phd Thesis. Research was designed to (1) develop a method to determine the limiting nutrient in a lotic ecosystem; resulted in production of the Matlock Periphytometer, (2) measure limiting nutrient in three watersheds in a basin; Peacheater, Tyner, and Battle Creeks, and (3) determine periphytic trophic status of lotic ecosystems in specific watersheds within a basin. Discussion of the research, with recommendations for further work are included.

Fluctuation in nutrient limitation in the streams over time was noted, as were co-limitations of N and P in two of the three streams.
