Current Projects

2001 - Green Country Watershed Education: The project targets two of the most valuable watersheds in Green Country, the northeast portion of Oklahoma. These are Spavinaw Creek, which feeds into Lake Eucha, a drinking water source for the city of Tulsa, and the Illinois River, Oklahoma?s first Scenic River. Major stakeholders in the project include Cherokee Nation, City of Tulsa, Oklahoma Conservation Commission, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission.

Environmental Programs for Educators: If you are a teacher or other professional educator, click here to take a look at a list of environmental programs available to you through OCES. You just might be surprised at how much we can add to your classroom or your club meeting.

Stillwater Creek Watershed Education: Focused on Stillwater Creek in Payne and Noble counties in Oklahoma, this project is oriented toward prevention of nonpoint source pollution. A survey will be used to assess attitudes of area residents and to help focus project activities. Initial efforts will target erosion control measures, in cooperation with City of Stillwater officials, as well as soil testing and nutrient management with both the rural and urban audiences.

Stillwater Creek Watershed Rural Roads Study: This scientific investigation will assess erosion on unpaved roads in Payne County, OK. Although it is the number one nonpoint source pollutant nationwide, the amount of sediment in runoff from rural roads has not been well documented. This study will install roadside troughs to catch post-rainfall samples for quantitative analysis of sediment content.

Completed Projects

1990 - Battle Branch Creek Hydrologic Unit Area Project:  operated from 1990 through 1999 in Delaware County, Oklahoma to address nonpoint source pollution in Battle Creek, a tributary to the Illinois River. It was sponsored by OSU Cooperative Extension, NRCS, and FSA.

1992 - Educational Support for Implementation of Agricultural BMPs in Southwestern Oklahoma: This 319 project educated cotton, wheat, peanuts, and dairy producers on BMPs to protect water quality from nutrients, pesticides, sediment, and bacteria. The project targeted the Lake Creek, Canadian Laterals, and Whiskey Creek watersheds.

1997 - Demonstration of Best Management Practices in the Salt Fork Watershed: demonstrated agricultural production BMPs in the watershed above the Great Salt Plains Wildlife Refuge, concentrated primarily in Alfalfa and Woods counties. The project was funded by EPA, OSU, and the Oklahoma Conservation Commission.

1997 - Watershed Protection through Manure Marketing (Pilot Program): provided stimulus to the relatively untapped market for agricultural wastes in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. A major accomplishment was combining the litter hotline of the Oklahoma Dept of Agriculture with the internet to produce an electronic poultry litter market.

1997 - Wellhead Protection Education for Communities and Homeowners: delineated wellhead protection areas (WHPAs) in six communities in four southeastern Oklahoma counties. The project team identified potential sources of contamination within each WHPA and provided alternative BMPs to reduce the risk associated with each source.
