1
Poultry Litter Is a Valuable Resource
  • Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service
2
Poultry litter contains all essential plant nutrients
3
Litter has high amount of organic matter which improves soil quality
4
A litter test is needed to know nutrient contents
5
Average Poultry Litter Test Results
6
A Program is Available to Calculate the Nutrient Value of Poultry Litter and Make Fertilizer Recommendations based on a Soil Test
  • http://www.soiltesting.okstate.edu/Interpretation.htm

7
Just N, P, and K values over $42/ton currently
(Micronutrients and OM are Valuable too)
8
The actual value may depend on the crop grown and soil nutrient levels
  • Legume crops generally need very little N
  • Soils high in P and K are not responding to additional application
  • A soil test is a good guide for determining an appropriate amount and  estimate the value of litter applied to a particular field
9
Make sure to get a good soil sample.
10
Soil test and nutrient requirement for 3 ton/A bermuda
11
It needs over 4 tons/A based N requirement (assume 50% N available in year 1), but only 1.1 ton/A based on P needs
12
Value of litter if applied based on N requirement. P not used in the 1st year should be there for future years, so only N is needed for the next several years (but the residual value of P is not included in this calculation)
13
Value of littler if applied based on P requirement, supplement N is needed
